Math Word Problems: A Simple Step-by-Step Kids Can Memorize
Word problems confuse kids when they try to do everything at once. A fixed sequence reduces overload.
1. Read for the story
First pass: ignore the numbers. What’s happening? What changes from start to end?
2. Draw or diagram
A bar model, quick sketch, or table makes relationships visible. If they can’t draw it, they don’t yet understand the situation.
3. Write the equation
Match operations to the story: combining often means addition; splitting or repeated groups often mean multiplication or division.
4. Check against reality
Does the answer make sense in the story? Estimating first catches wrong signs early.
